SalarySums Privacy Policy

Last updated:

SalarySums is provided by Jonathan Jones, trading as JonsTech, in the United Kingdom. In this policy, “we” means that operator. For privacy questions, contact hello@jonstech.co.uk.

This policy describes the SalarySums iPhone app and enquiries about it. Other JonsTech products and the JonsTech website may have different data practices.

The short version

  • Your household figures are saved on your device.
  • If you enable iCloud sync, a copy is also stored in your private iCloud database.
  • SalarySums AI and document reading use an on-device model on compatible iPhones.
  • This version of the app has no advertising, tracking, third-party analytics or third-party crash-reporting SDKs.
  • If you email us, we receive the information you choose to send.

Information you enter

SalarySums stores the information you add to organise your household and calculate estimates. This can include:

  • Household and person names, income labels and preferences.
  • Salary amounts, work patterns, tax region, tax codes, pension settings, student loan plans and other deductions.
  • Other income amounts and categories.
  • Savings pot names, providers, types, owner labels, balances, goals, planned payments, rates and monthly balance history.
  • Settings, reminder preferences and information used to manage synchronisation and recovery.

The app uses these records to calculate take-home estimates, show household totals and illustrate savings progress. It does not connect to your bank, request banking passwords or move money. You do not create a SalarySums account.

You can use a first name or nickname for household labels. Only enter another person’s information when you have an appropriate basis to do so.

Optional iCloud sync

iCloud sync is off until you enable it. When available and enabled, it stores your household records in a private Apple CloudKit database associated with your Apple Account. The app uses an encrypted CloudKit field for the household contents.

Sync is for your devices using the same Apple Account. Adding a person or an owner label does not invite that person or give them access to the household.

We do not receive a copy of your household through a JonsTech server. Apple operates iCloud under its own privacy policy and service terms. Protection and availability also depend on your Apple Account and device settings.

Turning sync off stops future app synchronisation. It leaves the existing local and iCloud copies in place. Changes already submitted to iCloud may finish processing.

On-device AI and document reading

When you send an AI message, SalarySums gives the on-device model your message, relevant recent conversation and a summary of your recorded household information. The summary can include income, savings pots, goals and recent balance history so the response can refer to your figures.

SalarySums uses Apple’s on-device model for these requests. It does not send them to a JonsTech server or an external AI service. Conversations are held in app memory, are not saved as household records and are not synced to iCloud. You can clear the conversation in the app; it also clears when the app process restarts.

If you choose a photo or PDF to fill a form, the selected copy is read on your iPhone. You review the suggested fields before applying them and saving the form. Original documents and extracted text are not added to your household or iCloud sync. Only the fields you save become ordinary household records.

The app attempts to delete its temporary document copy after processing finishes, including when processing fails. An interrupted session or failed cleanup can leave a copy in the device’s temporary storage. Your original photo or file is left unchanged. Selecting a document from a cloud file provider may require that provider to download it to your device.

These features depend on device compatibility and Apple Intelligence availability. AI output can be wrong. It provides general explanations and does not make decisions about credit, insurance, employment or eligibility for financial products.

Reminders and exports

Savings reminders are optional local notifications scheduled on your device after you grant permission. Their preferences are stored on that device and are not included in household iCloud sync. You can turn reminders off in the app or change notification permission in iPhone Settings.

Exporting creates a CSV containing your recorded household information and calculated figures. You choose whether to save or share it through the system share sheet. A receiving app or service then handles that copy under its own terms. SalarySums does not send an email on your behalf.

Temporary CSVs are kept in the app cache so receiving apps can read them. On a later export, SalarySums removes cached CSVs older than 24 hours. This is not a guaranteed 24-hour expiry. Copies you save or send remain wherever you put them.

Contacting support

If you contact hello@jonstech.co.uk, we receive your email address, message and any attachments or device details you include. We use them to answer your enquiry, investigate the issue and handle follow-up questions or complaints. Our email and IT service providers help deliver, store and protect that correspondence.

Please redact unnecessary financial and identifying details from screenshots or documents you send. Support does not have access to your private household simply because you use the app.

Retention, deletion and security

Household records remain in app storage until replaced or removed. Synchronisation may also keep a local comparison snapshot and a previous conflict copy so changes can be merged or recovered.

In Settings → Your data & privacy, you can export your records or use Clear all data to empty the active household and remove the conflict recovery copy. Local sync state can retain the previous synchronisation snapshot until it is refreshed. Clearing the active household is not a secure wipe of every stored copy.

If sync is enabled and access is active, clearing the household also queues the empty household for iCloud and your other devices. This needs a successful sync. With sync off, the existing iCloud copy remains. If sync is paused, pending changes can be sent when access resumes. Removing the app removes its local app storage; offloading it can keep that storage. Neither action automatically deletes your private iCloud copy, device backups or exported files.

You can also use Apple’s iCloud storage controls to manage the app’s cloud data where those controls are available. Apple-managed backups follow your backup settings and Apple’s retention arrangements.

We keep support correspondence only for as long as needed to answer the enquiry, handle related follow-up or disputes, and meet applicable legal obligations. Retention depends on the nature of the issue and whether it is resolved. Unnecessary information should be removed when it is no longer needed.

SalarySums uses the device’s app storage protections and Apple’s cloud services. The app does not add its own separate encryption layer to local household storage. We do not promise that every copy is end-to-end encrypted or that any storage system is completely secure.

Your rights

Where UK data protection law applies, requested app features are provided to perform our agreement with you. Support and service security rely on our legitimate interests in helping users and keeping the service reliable. We may retain information where a legal obligation requires it.

Depending on the circumstances, you can request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of personal information we hold. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Contact hello@jonstech.co.uk. We cannot retrieve device-only records or your private iCloud household from a JonsTech database; use the app’s controls for those records.

You can also raise a concern with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.

Apple services and changes to this policy

Apple’s App Store, iCloud and device diagnostic services have their own privacy terms and settings. This policy does not change how Apple operates those services.

We will update this policy if SalarySums’ data practices change. The date above identifies the latest version. Questions are welcome at hello@jonstech.co.uk.
